About My Term Research Paper

I found my term research paper to be very interesting. I was always interested in how social networking websites affected different types of relationships so i went ahead and researched a lot about it. It seems that it not only affects friends, intimate relationships and networking relationships but allllllll sorts of relationships we have. I went about my research looking up various studies done about this and found that all of them were either for or against it. I concluded my paper to say that the it can be a negative or positive thing depending on the user and how they use it.

About My Term Project

I presented on social networking and the destruction of human relationships. i believe the presentation went well. I found out some interesting things about social networking through my research. The most interesting things i found were the impacts social networking had on intimate relationships. It seems that couples do get jealous is they see posts from the opposite sex on their significant others pages. I will have to keep that in mind. Also another thing i found that was interesting was a case in London where a murder was cause by a simple change in relationship status from married to single. Things like this actually mean a lot more than we think they do.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

I have posted a great resource on our class wiki. The best freeware programs on the web today. Alot of users are looking for software than can be used to help them in their daily lives such as removing viruses from their computer and finding ways to edit pictures easily....FOR FREE!! check it out =)

New Media & Society

New media is affecting society in many ways. One of the biggest impacts ive seen is the time new media takes on society. We see social networking sites taking up a college students time when he or she can be studying or doing more productive things with their time. I believe this is one of the biggest negative effects that new media is taken on the current generation. This and the way information gets spread through the internet. There was a case where a girl had sent her boyfriend a naked picture of herself through the internet and when they broke up, he sent that picture to everyone he knew on the internet. The girl who was ashamed couldn't take it and hung herself in her closet. I believe these are the biggest impacts new media has had on society.

Privacy & Confidentiality

There are so many privacy issues through new media that we are faced with nowadays. i will focus on social networking websites. Websites such as myspace, facebook, etc. have been faced with privacy issues such as posting pictures online where everyone is able to view it. Once it gets out there people have the ability to copy it and send it to whoever they wish and it can spread to millions of people. This is why you shouldn't post things online that you wouldn't want strangers to see.

The Next New Thing

A new media that currently doesn't exist that i would like to see is music players that are able to stream videos. Seems that it takes too much time to download videos to your myusic player and i think it would be a lot better if people were able to view it quicker and easier onto your phones with streaming videos.

Advice to Baruch College

If i were to give baruch college advise on how to use new media to improve the baruch community, I would tell them first to take down or improve blackboard. It seems that blackboard has way too many issues and can be different in terms of how to upload content on to class pages. Also i would tell them to create their own social network page where people can post content on advice. It seems that when you find something out about graduating at baruch, it is either too late or just in time. We need step by step instructions on what classes to take, what tests to take, and what professors to take. All this can be done through wikis.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

We have heard of second life, a virtual reality world that simulates the real world. These can be used for companies in many ways. The major way it can be utilized is if a company is world wide and new employees need to get in touch with other employees across the world. They can create their avatar and meet other people within the virtual world created by the user. That is the pro, the ease of the user who is able to meet other people "face to face". A con to this is that it can hinder their real world communication skills like actually talking to someone face to face or seeing someones expression to what you are saying. I think the future of virtual worlds will include more realistic images of the the person looks like and their expressions as well. I believe it will look more real and less virtual as time goes on.

Social Networking

There are many ways companies can utilize social networking sites. For example, a company can create their own social networking site within their company so employees can have a better knowledge of they are working with. A downside to this is that the employees may spend too much time on these sites and it can distract them from work. I do beleve however that sites such as facebook will create company facebooks that will be used within companies that can be managed by the company itself. This can also be used to see whos doing what and how long they are spending on the site

Blogs vs. Wikis

Blogs and wikis are two different yet two very similar things. Blogs are like diaries that are user can post online about things that go on in his or her daily lives. Wikis are usually used to post content that a user wants to later edit or change. They are alike because of their ease of availability and the users who actually use these tools in their daily lives. With wikis, many people use it for work because its easy to change and edit what was posted. People can also see who changed the post in wikis. Blogs can be used to collaborate through their posts and commenting on other peoples blogs.

Old vs. New

How can we really distinguish old media from new media? Its simple. If it is quicker and easier to do, it is new media. Lets take newspapers for example. Traditionally, we would have to order a newspaper service or buy newspapers each day, read page by page, while turning the pages and later having to wipe off ink from your fingers. After you're done, you would have to throw them out and feel bad for wasting paper. NEW MEDIA with newspapers would be going online or customizing an online page to get the news YOU WANT and reading what you want to read with a simple click of the mouse. On top of that, it is free. Its quicker and paperless. The only downside is to the companies who rely on selling newspapers for a business.

Check Out Social Networking Sites

In my conclusion, after visiting the sites facebook, myspace, friendster, and linkedinin, I have come to the following conclusion. All of these sites are basically the same. FB, myspace, and friendster have to do mainly with connecting with friends and family, updating statuses, posting pictures and writing about yourself. The only different site I have noticed was linkedin. This website was geared towards the working class to network and connect with individuals in work and to find better opportunities in the work force. I have made an account with it and hopefully will land a better job than I have now.

What is New Media?

What kinds of technologies are part of the new media?
There are so many technologies nowadays that are part of new media. However I believe aside from computers, cell phones are the new craze associated with new media. Why you ask? I have come to know that cell phones have the same capabilities computers do. Its like a mini computer on its own. You can go on the internet, post on blogs, update your fb status etc. You can also have video calls on some phones which i thought was pretty cool.
How important is the Internet to the new media? Why and how are the new media replacing and / or enhancing the old media?
The internet is very important to new media. I believe the Internet is the medium to which we all interact. Without it, we wouldnt be able to talk to friends and family across the world as quickly as we do with the internet. One specific site, youtube is away that cannot be used without the internet. To share videos, the internet needs to connect from the host to the client and needs some sort of connection to do so.
